A little bit of History
Formerly part of the medieval fortress of Ross Castle and subsequently Castle Widenham, a former gate lodge of what is now Blackwater Castle was sold to its current owners in 1995.
The Lodge as a former gate lodge, monitored access to the Castle and is marked out on the OS maps of the mid 1800s was originally constructed in the early years of the 19th century.
The access rout to the Castle was re-ordered in the late 1800s when a more elaborate tree lined avenue was established some 100 metres south of “ The Lodge”. This access route was closed off and is now incorporated into what is now a woodland area of oak and other broadleaf species providing a secluded, peaceful, private and beautiful backdrop to this fine property.
